Product Description:

Eudora is a mail and news application based on the open source Thunderbird client from Mozilla. It's *not* our intention to compete with Thunderbird; rather, we want to complement it.

We are committed to both preserving the Eudora user experience and to maintaining maximum compatibility, for both developers and users, with Thunderbird. It is our goal to build a single development community around Thunderbird and Eudora, so that both mailers advance faster than they previously have.

Whereas "Eudora" is a branded version of Thunderbird with some extra features added by the Eudora developers, "Penelope" is an extension (also called an "add-on") that can be used with either Eudora or Thunderbird. The Eudora installer includes the corresponding version of Penelope along with it so there is no need to install Penelope if you are installing Eudora. Most features in Penelope can be accessed when used with Thunderbird, but there are a few that require Eudora in order to work correctly and it's not something that gets tested.

Sometimes in documentation there is a need to differentiate the older versions of Eudora made by Qualcomm from current Thunderbird-based versions of Eudora. This will normally be done by labeling the older versions of Eudora as "original Eudora" or "Classic Eudora".

Eudora ReviewWon't import - Version: 8.0.0b4, 11/13/2008 10:55AM PST

The initial startup request to import all Eudora material was chugging away when it crashed. Thereafter, the program simply opened, and the various import options from within the program (to import from 6.2.4) do not work, they always crash, in fact Import all was greyed out (apparently not yet enabled). I was unable to find the pref folder so I could delete it to reset Eudora to re-try the initial startup importation button. Don't know why anyone would download this if they weren't a former Eudora user, and if it won't import, what's the point?

Eudora CommentaryEudora rises from the ashes... - Version: 8.0.0b4, 11/4/2008 05:39PM PST

Amazingly, this release is useable and stable so far. Safari mangles the download; use another browser such as Firefox instead. Mail, filters and settings import from Eudora v6. As expected, some features don't work, such as the Transfer menu. All told, a major improvement over the b3 release, which was generally useless.

Unfortunately, the new Eudora still cannot successfully import my old Eudora mail folders, so it's next to useless. Progress on this app seems painfully slow with little useful improvement from one version to the next. It what they are actually trying to do is kill Eudora, then they are doing a fine job at that. If not, they need to focus on basic essentials - like making it possible to migrate from the old program to the new. Without this ability, everything else they are doing is a waste of time and effort.
